While it's "considerate" of the management to upload this entire 11 GB archive to the Internet Archive for preservation, it's not very well organized.

All the files were haphazardly tossed in with little consideration to where. Yes, hacks are in their own folder… documents… screenshots… That's all fine and dandy, but, here's the thing.
That's as far as it goes.
It's not organized by game, or even by hack author. It's organized by when it was uploaded and maintains the original upload archive filenames, leaving the user to route around blindly for their favorite hacks. For example, would most people be able to tell what a file named "ttpac123" or "dontpanic" is? If you're looking for something specific, you'd better hope that the original author used a descriptive name like "Ultima - Runes of Virtue - Legend of Zelda Skin". Otherwise, good luck.
It's also worth noting that this entire archive was uploaded with only the implied consent of the original creators — this stemming from the idea that they put their work on the website to begin with. No one was explicitly asked if their work could be shared outside of ROMhacking[dot]net and, in fact, more than a few ROM hacks specifically say they're not to be distributed outside of that website. Just something to think about.

Virus. Also Used Virus Total Website and its Perfectly Fine. I know most Anti Virus Software and VPNs now a days are total Trash but this archive of a Quick Rom Hack Dump from a Old Website is Fine, its at least a good starting point to find what you want and delete what you want.
TLDR- I ran it with my own Anti Virus and VirusTotal and its perfectly Fine with maybe 3-5 things it flags as a False Positive.

is too big for that website so I bravely downloaded it and had windows scan the zip file. I got several hits. It might be false positives but I don't want to take a chance. Perhaps this could be reuploaded without the questionable files, or the files be investigated (identified on the website) to make sure they are safe?

out of the thousands of tiles a trojan, I can't risk pwning my system. I'll wait until these are released on another website. There is always the option of downloading the file in a virtual machine and taking out the files that you want. I might do that when I get interested in game translations.

I'm very sad that romhacking.net will be gone. Within all of the time I was interested in romhacking I have used it for almost every romhack i've downloaded.

Soon to be gone but not forgotten. On the flipside, I wonder how easily someone (or myself) could code a new site with this archive, seeing as it's somehow only 11GB. I could fit that onto my VPS and have it take up no space at all. But anyways, still, i'll remember all the memories with this legend of a website. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I feel there should be separate patch folders for the NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, Genesis, N64, etc.
Having everything in just one folder causes slow loading ... speeds while scrolling through the list.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'm visiting the site and the projects it hosted on archive.org.
This site was/has the reason I tried and ended up ... buying so many games and consoles I previously had no interest in playing... and 75% of the reason I've played Dr. Mario for the 1,000th time or started and beat yet another town on another version of Animal Crossing.
I truly hope another central, community-led, and high-quality library of labor and love rises to continue such a fantastic legacy.
