Birth, puberty, marriage, and death are, in all cultures, marked by ceremonies which may differ but are universal in function. Arnold van Gennep (1873-1957) was the first anthropologist to note the regularity and significance of the rituals attached to the transitional stages in man's life, and his phrase for these, "the rites of passage," has become a part of the language of anthropology and sociology.

Subject: A thought provoking read ~
A helpful book that discusses a number of rites pertaining to death and the practices of mourning.
This is a thoughtful read about a sensitive topic.
Providing ... a tidy offering of examples and descriptions about other practices pertaining to death and the ceremony surrounding laying the dead to rest..
"The Rites of Passage" richly informs the reader of different cultures rituals and practices at all three stages of mourning: before, during, and after burying the deceased. Including a mention of the connection between the moon and stars and its symbolic representation of the 'rites of passage' as part of helping a soul move on, ("Funerals, pg. 146-")
This book also points out the evolving roles of figures involved in the delicate process of funerals (priests, doctors, morticians, etc.) and their nuanced place in living society. That the living are in the business of death and dying, and societies complicated accepting or rejecting reaction to these individuals is mindfully touched upon.
"The Rites of Passage" is a book written in the long-winded language typical of this time but overall is a satisfyingly read that I would recommend. It is supplemented with a healthy number of citations at the bottom of each page, and an index is conveniently provided at the back for quick reference
