EDWARD JAMES WEINSTEIN,

COMMONLY KNOWN AS JAMES WEINSTEIN

interviewed

i<ew York Office of the FBI during March, 1954, at which
tine she described EDWARD JAMES WEINSTEIN as follows:

reviewing photographs in a Cornell yearbook,
[identified WEINSTEIN as being in attendance
at r.eetings of the Student Section of the CP at Cornell
University. She stated she could not say that WEINSTEIN was
a member of this group as she had not seen his CP membership
card, but had assumed all were members because they attended
meetings. She recalled that WEINSTEIN was a member of the class
of 1949, and for a period, was a regular attendant at these
meetings. She recalled that he was wealthy and ashamed of it.
She stated that after WEINSTEIN started to attend meetings , she
had a recollection that he had been excused or exempt from
attending meetings in the past.

A source advised on January 7 and 8, 1954, that he

on Stanton Street, New York City, New York. WEINSTEIN continued , .
to be active in the LYL and attended 6treet meetings* in New York j

The January 11, 1963 issue of the ''San Francisco
Chronicle," a San Francisco daily newspaper, in an article
entitled "Group Cited As Front For Communists," reported that
Attorney General ROBERT F. KENNEDY asked the Subersive Activities
Control Board (SACB) on January 10, 1963, to order Advance, a New
York City group, to register as a Communist front organization.

The article stated that in a petition presented to the SACB,

KENNEDY charged that Advance, which described itself as an
"organization of progressive youth," was organized by the CP in
February, 1960. The petition also said that the purpose of the
organization was aiding and supporting the CP by conducting picket
lines, protest rallies, propaganda campaigns, and other activities.

CONF*NTIAL

A

Public hearings on a petition by the United States
Attorney General to the SACB for an order requiring Advance to
register as recuired by the Subversive Activities Control Act of
1950, were held at 641 Washington Avenue, New York City, New York,
during 1963. - •

On December 16, 1963, the respondent (Advance) called
as a witness DANIEL S. BEAGLE, 1? West 9Sth Street, New York
City, New York. BEAGLE stated he was a senior at Columbia
University and was chairman of a political campus club known
as "Action." BEAGLE discussed at length the platform and aims
of Action. The counsel for the respondent stated that it was
her purpose to show that the platform and aims of Action were the
sane as those of Advance.

BEAGLE stated his organisation had joined with Advance
in several protest meetings. He stated he had sponsored the
appearance of MARVIN MARKMAN on the campus of Columbia as a
speaker and that BEAGLE's organization, Action, had been active
in publicizing the petition against Advance.

BEAGLE testified under cross-examination by the
Government that he had attended an Executive Board meeting of
Advance in January or February, 1963, and had known MARVIN MARKMAN
for approximately two years. He testified that he was not aware
of any Communist affiliation on the part of MARKMAN and other
members of Advance.

On December 18, 1963, BEAGLE was recalled to the stand
for additional cross-examination. He testified he had conferred
with MAPKMAN and another individual concerning what wav BEAGLE's
organ j zation , Action, could assist Advance. BEAGCE stated that
subsequently. Action conducted a number of meetings, published
leaflets, and sponsored speeches in an attempt to persuade people
that the Me Carran Act should be repealed. BEAGLE testified that
Action v;as not a CP front, that he was not a member of the CP, and
had never been approached to join the CP. He added that he and his
Organization would defend the civil rights and right to free speech
of neo-Nazi organizations as well as other organizations.

On November 19, 1963, the Attorney General
of the United States petitioned the SACB to
order ten individuals to register with him
as members of the CPUSA, pursuant to the
provisions of Section 8 of the Interal Security
Act of 1950. MARVIN JOEL MARKMAN was one of
those so listed.

should be on developing mass resistance to the draft.
