HOLLAND GROWN BULBS

Tidings of Spring - 1956

CROCUS

Every gardener loves these courageous little flowers which appear early in March. Tightly folded
buds develop into vivid cup-shaped blossoms above the prettily striped foliage. Planted in small
clumps they resemble a collection of quaint old-fashioned bouquets. Planted in a scattered
lashion, they dramatize a lawn. They may be used for edgings, or massed under trees and shrubs.
The Crocus lend a gala effect and are always a perennial delight.

LUCILIAE. Clusters of bright blue star-like flowers each with a white throat. In bloom with the
Crocus, they offer a delightful contrast with their spreading informal growth and the vivid blue
carpet effect of their blooms. Best when planted about 3 inches apart, in full sun or light shade,
but where they may be left undisturbed as they readily multiply by themselves. Height about 7
inches. Top Size Bulbs, 25 for $1.25: 100, $4.50

WUSCARI-G TAPE Hyacinth

The Hollanders plant literally carpets of Muscari in their gardens, and combine them with the
Daffodils, the Hyacinths, and the Early Tulips with equal effectiveness. The plants grow about
9 inches high with many spikes of fragrant flowers. Hardy and easily grown, they will reappear
every year and gradually multiply. Muscari should be planted thickly, spacing the bulbs 3 inches
apart.

BOTRYOIDES ALBA. Pure white flowers on ARMENIACUM. Bright royal blue flowers on
long stiff stems; tidy and trim. Foliage is com-

HOLLAND GROWN HY ACINTHS

There is nothing shy about the Hyacinths in the early spring. Hyacinths are of bold strong
colors, intense fragrance, firm flower substance and of uniform height; a marvel of composition.
One of Nature’s most lavish gifts, they are an integral part of the spring gardens. Few displays
can equal their brilliance, few are more welcome after the long winter months. Hyacinths bloom
from late March through April, depending on locality. The plants grow from 9 to 12 inches tall,
and should be spaced about 9 inches apart. Plant in colonies of a single color for the best effect.

Flowerfield offers large 17 to 18 cm. bulbs packed NOTE: There is a difference of ten days in
to our special order in Holland. Therefore, we the blooming period of certain varieties. We
cannot open bags for smaller quantities. Bulbs have grouped these under separate headings.

Votice the way the Hyacinths are planted in masses and drifts instead of the ordinary straight
rows and rigidly confined beds. Also notice, that they are planted in clumps of a single color.
These same colors are repeated here and there again to achieve rhythm and balance. A superb

FLOWERFIELD sells only Holland grown Tulips, supplied
through the best growers there. We test every variety for a
year or two beforehand and select only the most significant
ones of each type and color. This means not only the newer
introductions but also many of the older varieties that have not
yet been superseded. Further, sample plantings are made from
each year’s shipments of every variety offered. As a result,
we respect and endorse the high standards of the Holland
growers in producing healthy, true-to-name and beautiful Tulips.
A visit to the growing fields of Holland makes one realize how
well they have mastered their art.

Bulbs are packed to our special order in Holland. We cannot
open bags for smaller quantities.

For earliest spring bloom, we especially recommend: Single
Early Tulip BELLONA, a recent introduction of great merit.

AMARYLLIS: Royal’ Dutch Hybrids

FLOWERFIELD proudly offers the new, rare and internationally famous Warmenhoven strain of
Royal Dutch Hybrid Amaryllis, sent to us direct from the Warmenhoven greenhouses in Holland.
A departure from the older types, they are truly magnificent in flower form. Measuring at least
6 inches across, they are broad and flattened rather than bell-shaped. The colors are brilliant and
clear, and somewhat luminous because of a delicate crepe-like surface. The tall strong stalks hold
4 to 5 blooms aloft; some as high as 40 inches, according to the individual characteristics of a
variety (they vary not only in color and height, but also blooming period).

Bulbs may be used over again for many years (after the usual resting period), plant in a 7-inch

pot, with the “neck” protruding.

All the Royal Dutch Hybrid Amaryllis will have their roots attached, having been treated for early
bloom. We offer two sizes; both will bloom this year, the top size however, will produce at least
two blooming stalks. In general, they are all about four or more years old. November delivery.

IRIS KAEMPFERI,

IRIS KAEMPFERI,
KOK! NO IRO

Baise elds IRIS
Sys ike o Japan

A FLOWERFIELD SPECIALTY SINCE 1903

FLOWERFLELD has been known for many years as a specialist in the development and culture
of the Japanese Iris which are more properly identified as “Iris Kaempferi.” We have enjoyed
the reputation of being a reliable source of these plants.

Our own collection was first established by John Lewis Childs with varieties selected in Japan
and imported from there in 1895. The nucleus of this original collection was made up of the
classic Matsudaira varieties of Hana-Shobu (Japanese Iris) which had been confined to the Im-
perial court. These plants were brought to Flowerfield where they have been in continued culti-
vation. Besides these, scores of seedlings were developed and introduced to the gardening world.
Flowerfield has cultivated this valuable flower for over 58 years with the utmost care and vigilance

in preserving trueness of variety.

BANGKOK. One of the earliest to bloom, this
lovely delphinium-blue flower has perfect
form as well as being exceptionally long last-
ing. The falls, overlapping and arching, are
waved and creped. The narrow, pointed stand-
ards are held vertically and are of the same
blue. Tall growing, 42 inches high, it is an
excellent mixed border plant.

Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00
BETTY F. HOLMES. The most luxuriant

flower of all the white varieties. The falls,
broad and overlapping, are held somewhat
horizontally. The standards, deeply waved,
are equally large in size. The styles and style
branches form a high-rounded cluster in the
crown. Tall growing, well over 4 feet high,
it attracts immediate attention in the garden.
This variety combined with the deep red-
purple Koki No Iro and tall white Madonna
Lilies make a stunning picture. Illustrated.

Each $1.50, Three $4.25
BLUE OPAL. Lavender-blue with a _ blue

overcast. A double flower with standards and
falls alike in size, each marked with a bright
blue band around the yellow signal patches.
Styles are white tipped with rose; bloom has

an opalescent effect. A variety just recently
released. Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00

DIMOONEATHE. Flowerfield origination.
This stunning variety of triple formation opens
Delphinium-blue, gradually paling to white.
The falls, standards and styles are large and
ruffled. Accessory style branches form an airy
crown on the bloom. Midseason, it is a beau-
tiful companion plant to the Madonna Lilies.

Each $2.75, Three $7.50

HATSU SHIMA. Very early blooming and
pure white throughout. A single flower of tri-
angular form, the falls are separate and held
horizontally. Standards are small and com-
pact. The styles, closely set on the falls, al-
most cover the yellow signal patches. A good
sturdy grower, tall growing and erect, an ex-
cellent variety for massing.

Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00
HENDERSONI. Deep red-purple medium-

sized flowers with standards and falls neatly
overlapping and alike in size. Bright yellow
signal patches and white styles create a pleas-
ing contrast. Tall growing, 42 inches high, it
blooms in early midseason, one of the earliest

of the double “reds” to show color.
Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00

HOWAKAN. Mauvye-rose veining on white,
with the areas in between also splashed with
the same color which disappears at the edges
leaving a fine border of white. The falls, held
horizontally, are beautifully waved and creped.
Standards of deep mauve are pointed and nar-
row, with styles of white tipped mauve. Gar-
den effect is pale rose. This variety is early
blooming and like Hatsu Shima, has an un-
usually prolonged period of bloom. Height 36
inches. Each $1.50, Three $4.25

LA FAVORITE. A double large white bloom
of imposing beauty. Both the falls and stand-
ards are held horizontally with edges deeply
ruffed. Pale blue veins radiate from the yel-
low signal patches, enhancing the whiteness
of the bloom. White styles veiled with blue
are firm textured and upright on the crown.
Height 45 inches. Bloom in early midseason.

Three $2.00, Doz. $6.75

CULTURE is uncomplicated. The IRIS KAEMPFERI is slower growing and therefore com-
pact; division every third or fourth year is sufficient. Contrary to general belief, they do not
require a damp location; this would hinder good drainage which is more essential. However,
a good soaking prior to and during the blooming period will result in larger flowers. A good

rich garden loam, on the acid side, rather than a soil with too much lime is better. A liberal

addition of peat moss is beneficial. IRIS KAEMPFERI needs full sun although it tolerates

some open shade.

IZUMI GAWA. Late to bloom, this pretty
flower has great appeal. The circular, firm
textured falls and standards are alike in size
(a true double), and measure 7 in. in diameter.
The deep violet veins on pure white ground
make it look like printed calico. Deep violet
styles and style branches form a rounded clus-
ter above the yellow signal patch. 30 in. tall.

Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00

KAMATA. “CITY OF DREAMS”, deep blue-
purple of velvety texture with waved and arch-
ing falls quite broad at the margin. Standards
are rounded and cup-shaped. Styles of self
color are upright and prominent.

Each $1.00, Three $2.75, Doz. $8.00

LIGHT IN THE OPAL. One of the loveliest
orchid-pink flowers in existence. Fully double.
falls and standards are marked with a bright
blue border around the yellow signal patches
and this, together with the light styles clustered
in the crown adds to the airiness of the opal-
escent flowers. Late blooming, 36 inches tall.

Each $2.00, Three $5.75

YAMA YAMA. Also known as “Mountain
Glacier.” A conical white flower. The broad
